Legacy Garden Project – 2014

Meeting

Adam MacLean explains The Legacy Garden Project to the Friends of the Farm Board, February 2014. The Project covers 8 1/2 acres of land behind the Farm Centre. It will be planted with community gardens, orchards and varieties of grain developed on PEI. It connects people with sources of food as they garden and volunteer. The public will be welcome to education sessions and to observe the gardens which overlook the Experiemental Farm.

In Memory of Dr. Lloyd Macleod

Members of the Friends of the Farm were saddened to learn of the passing of Lloyd MacLeod on October 9th, 2013.

Lloyd was the Director of the Canada Agriculture Research Station (Experimental Farm) in Charlottetown from 1970 – 1990.

During his time as Director of the Farm, Lloyd and his family resided at Ravenwood House located on the Farm property. The MacLeod family have been recognised as the last residents of Ravenwood.

Upon retirement, Lloyd’s interest in the Farm remained strong as he was instrumental in the establishment of the Friends of the Farm. As the founding Chair of the Friends of the Farm, Lloyd continued to advocate for the preservation of the Farm as a public green space. At the time of his passing, Lloyd was Honorary Chair of the Board of the Friends of the Farm and remained intently interested in the future of the Farm and in the work of the Friends of the Farm.

As we move forward in the days ahead, Lloyd’s leadership and dedication will serve as an inspiration to each and every one of us as we continue Lloyd’s work.

All members of The Friends of the Farm extend sincere condolences to Lloyd’s family during this time.

Soaring to New Heights

Announcement
Friends of the Farm is pleased to be partnering with Agriculture Canada, Parks Canada, PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, and UPEI (Robertson Library), to present “Soaring to New Heights: Kite Flying on the Farm” as part of the 2014 Island wide celebrations.

This will be a festival of flying kites on our “Beloved Experimental Farm”, inviting the expertise of our newcomer communities who hold centuries-old traditions of building and kite flying to share their skills, and for islanders to travel that historical path to the “Experimental Farm” to gather and celebrate.

Parks Canada’s “Ardgowan”, the adjacent property to “The Farm”, where a Confederation party or two was held, will be open to the public for walking tours.

Please stay tuned to this website. As the details unfold, we will share them with you!

Summer News

The Board of the Friends of the Farm wish to let you know of activities this summer. We are pleased to tell you the following.
  • A memorial bench was placed in memory of Janice Simmonds, who served as Board chair until her passing in May, 2012.  The bench is on the Confederation Trail at the point where the road intersects the Trail in the middle of the Farm. A flower bed was created and filled with perennials and annuals. It is hoped that this will be enjoyed by all who pass through the Farm and that it will provide a pleasant resting spot.
  • The Royal Crown Garden is planted and looks beautiful. Vankampen’s Greenhouses provided the 1,600 plants at a 50% discount again this year. Planting was done by the staff of the Experimental Farm and Board members are tending both the Crown Garden and the Memorial Garden.
  • The Friends of the Farm was successful in receiving a small event grant from 2014 Celebration for “Soaring to New Heights- Kite Flying on the Farm”. The application was supported by the New Comers Association, The Robertson Library at UPEI and Parks Canada in recognition of the historical link with Ardgowan. Thanks to Laura Lee Howard, Board member for her preparation on this successful proposal.
  • Senator Catherine Callbeck will plant a tree in the Premiers Grove on the Farm. This will mean that all Premiers from Walter Shaw onward will have planted a tree.  Senator Callbeck will plant on Wednesday, July 17 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to come and enjoy the Farm and share this event.
The Board meets monthly with the exception of July and August
We wish everyone a pleasant summer.
